Dr. Douglas Ousterhout didn’t become a leading member of the exclusive Facial Feminization Surgery community by chance. The influential doctor has gathered over 40 years of specialized craniofacial surgery experience that has allowed him to become a figurehead in this prestigious surgical field, and with the help of Mira Coluccio, his medical practice has expanded to help a variety of new patients that travel from great distances to receive his treatment.
Dr. Ousterhout went to college at the University of Colorado in Boulder, before traveling to the Minerva Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. After returning from studies in Switzerland, Dr. Ousterhout finished his schooling at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, earning both a dental degree and a medical degree. Before graduating from Michigan in 1965, Dr. Ousterhout joined prestigious honor societies, such as the Dental Academic, Medical Historical, and Medical Academic Honor Fraternities.
Before returning to the University of Michigan to act as a resident in general surgery, Dr. Ousterhout conducted a successful service run in the army, where he served as a Captain in the Medical Corps for two years.
After work in the army and residency in Michigan, Dr. Ousterhout traveled to the Stanford University Medical Center, one of the top medical centers in the entire country, where he held a role as Chief Resident of Plastic Surgery for three years. Dr. Ousterhout’s impressive early work earned him the right to become an assistant to Doctor Paul Tessier, becoming the first American to help out the revolutionary French craniofacial surgeon.
After working with Tessier, Ousterhout gathered impressive surgery skills that set him apart form other plastic surgeons. In addition to his highly specialized work with the craniofacial leader, Outserhout also began using his background in dentistry to aid his skills. With background knowledge of jaw and bone structure around the mouth, Ousterhout procured a set of tools that many plastic facial sculpting surgeons lacked.
Dr. Ousterhout became certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery soon after his return to the United States, and has since earned fellowships in a variety of medical societies, such as the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery.
Another aspect of Dr. Ousterhout’s unique and impressive surgery career stemmed from his work at the Center for Craniofacial Anomalies at the UCSF Medical Center. Dr. Ousterhout worked as head surgeon at the center for 25 years, utilizing his skills to help children with extreme skull abnormalities. Dr. Ousterhout’s work at the UCSF Medical Center allowed him to create revolutionary new techniques for shaping the skull.
Dr. Ousterhout has completed over 918 procedures since 1978, and has worked on the boards of numerous medical societies. Dr. Ousterhout acted as President of the American Society of Maxillofacial surgeons, and currently works at the Davies Medical Center in San Francisco, but is also a Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Ousterhout has even published numerous scientific works, including Aesthetic Contouring of the Craniofacial Skeleton, a well known medical textbook.
